Free webinar to bring together the winner of the ‘Nobel Prize for the Environment’ to discuss opportunities such as the Amazon Bioinnovation Challenge

The Amazon will be at the heart of the debate on science, innovation and market access during the webinar ‘Amazon Bioinnovation: Science, Markets and Global Opportunities for R&D’, which will take place on 17 June, from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm (Brasília time). The event is free, open to the public and will feature simultaneous interpretation into Portuguese and English, with the event streamed via Zoom and YouTube (@idesanico).

One of the highlights of the programme is the participation of anthropologist Eduardo S. Brondizio, a full professor at Indiana University (United States) and one of the winners of the 2025 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement, internationally regarded as the “Nobel Prize for the Environment”. For over four decades, Brondizio has been conducting research with Amazonian communities on socio-environmental transformations and territorial governance. He also served as co-chair of the Global Report of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), a document that informed the targets of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity.

The initiative will present the Amazonian bioeconomy as a strategic frontier for applied research, science-based innovation and the development of new products in the food, cosmetics and new materials sectors. In addition to Eduardo, the programme will feature Romulo Zamberlan, Director of Advanced Research at Natura, who will share insights into corporate activities and opportunities for innovation in the Amazon.

The topics of the meeting tie in with the international call for proposals coordinated by IDESAM, through ZOMA, the Amazon Bioinnovation Challenge, for which registrations are open until 30 June.

According to Paulo Simonetti, Innovation Manager at IDESAM and moderator of the event, the webinar represents an opportunity to bring together different stakeholders around the transformative potential of the Amazonian socio-bioeconomy.

“The Amazon presents some of the greatest challenges and opportunities for biodiversity-based innovation. This webinar was designed precisely to connect researchers, companies and experts from different parts of the world with initiatives already being developed in the region. We want to show that it is possible to generate knowledge, develop technologies and create solutions that have a positive impact on people, local areas and the forest,” emphasises Simonetti.

The webinar is open to the general public, but is particularly aimed at professionals working in research and development, innovation, product development, new business ventures, food, cosmetics, biomaterials, natural ingredients, biotechnology, green chemistry, materials science and global supply chains linked to biodiversity.
