Value-creation mechanisms highlight the need to add greater value to community conservation practices
Conserving the Amazon is essential to combat climate change and ensure the rainfall regime vital for food production and water supply in the country. Idesam promotes forest conservation and the reduction of deforestation, encouraging low-carbon production networks.
Environmental services are actions that maintain or restore essential ecosystem functions, such as carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation and water regulation.
Idesam invests in forest restoration through Agroforestry Systems (SAFs), which regenerate the soil and ensure sustainable productivity. Valuing the forest through environmental services projects, such as REDD, is also a strategy that enables the attraction of resources for the development and conservation of territories.
Furthermore, Idesam works to influence and contribute to national (and international) discussions on mechanisms for forest conservation and REDD, as well as decision-making in Brazil’s carbon market.
It enables companies, events and individuals to offset their emissions by planting Agroforestry Systems (SAFs) in degraded areas of the Amazon. The initiative promotes environmental recovery and generates sustainable income for local communities, contributing to climate change mitigation and the strengthening of the standing forest economy.
Forest Carbon Dashboard
The Forest Carbon Dashboard, developed by Idesam, is an interactive tool that maps forest carbon projects in Brazil, particularly in the Amazon. Launched in 2024, it compiles public information on conservation and restoration initiatives that generate carbon credits, promoting transparency and facilitating access to data for civil society.
Grown in agroforestry systems that promote forest regeneration, it generates income for local families and contributes to biodiversity conservation. Amazônia Agroflorestal, an initiative spun off from Idesam, is responsible for the Apuí Coffee value chain, guaranteeing the purchase of produce at fair prices and ensuring organic certification.
Idesam, through the project “Productive Ecological Restoration: Promoting a Sustainable Landscape in the Amazon”, is part of the Floresta Viva initiative, coordinated by Funbio. This project aims to restore 200 hectares in Conservation Units in Amazonas, combining agroforestry systems and the enrichment of secondary forests, as well as training local communities.
