In this unprecedented study, we mapped and assessed the legality of logging in the Brazilian Amazon between August 2020 and July 2021. The ten municipalities with the most unauthorized logging accounted for 49% of all unauthorized logging during this period. Of these municipalities, eight are located in Mato Grosso and two in Amazonas. Mitigating unauthorized logging in the Amazon requires centralized, up-to-date information accessible through forest control systems. This would enable the implementation of real-time monitoring routines and the adoption of fraud control tools, including timber product traceability.
