Connections, investment,
commercialisation: the Amazon’s new sustainable economy is already bearing fruit for
its peoples

Innovation combined with traditional knowledge has always been at the heart of Idesam. For over 20 years, we have believed that a new economy for the Amazon emerges from the region’s knowledge and productive networks, translating into real solutions for society.

Promoting the bioeconomy through the use of natural resources in high value-added products, such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food, drives regional economic development and ensures the conservation of the forest and the well-being of local communities.
Idesam believes that by combining innovation, tradition and respect for the environment, it is possible to build a prosperous and sustainable future for the Amazon. Idesam’s bioeconomy innovation agenda comprises: Initiatives to foster business creation and incubation in the Amazon; Technological solutions for: socio-productive inclusion, overcoming bottlenecks in supply chains, and adding value through knowledge; Studies to promote production chains; Mobilisation of the innovation ecosystem in the Amazon.
This work is consolidated by linking investments from companies in the Manaus Industrial Hub (PIM) to innovative ideas via the Priority Bioeconomy Programme, an MDIC/SUFRAMA initiative that Idesam has coordinated since winning a public tender in 2018.
The Priority Bioeconomy Programme (PPBio) encourages PIM companies to support the bioeconomy through their mandatory R&D&I investment funds.
It is a key element in maximising socio-economic impact, and through it it has been possible to foster an ecosystem of services and solutions for the bioeconomy, based on solutions such as best production practices, traceability, entrepreneurial management, value addition, standardisation of packaging, drying and various production technologies, as well as adding value to forest assets for communities, impact businesses and start-ups.
