carbon-neutral programme

Find out more about Idesam’s Carbon Neutral Programme

The Idesam Carbon Neutral Programme (PCN) was launched in 2010 with the aim of connecting major urban centres to forests, enabling people, businesses and initiatives to take responsibility for the impacts they have on the planet by offsetting
their greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

Neutralisation is achieved by planting native trees in Agroforestry Systems (SAF), a method that prioritises species of economic value to the communities of the Uatumã Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS) in Amazonas.

The PCN’s working methodology has already been recognised by various
initiatives and is now part of the FBB’s Social Technologies Bank.

Partner Families

Idesam knows that keeping the forest standing is only possible if the people living in the Amazon are also empowered. Our mission is also to work side by side with these communities, demonstrating the economic benefits that a conserved forest can offer.

Our Activities

  • Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventories for companies, events, initiatives and individuals;
  • Development of GHG emission reduction strategies;
  • Measurement of individual carbon footprints: online emissions calculator;
  • Offsetting emissions through the planting of agroforestry systems in the region.

FAQ

The PCN-Idesam programme focuses on the Amazon, with planting activities in the Uatumã Sustainable Development Reserve, located near Manaus and covering the municipalities of São Sebastião do Uatumã and Itapiranga.

The calculator on the website for individuals;The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory for organisations;Donations.

No. The calculator available on the website is intended solely for the carbon offsetting of individuals, as it is a simplified and automated version for estimating carbon footprints, a way of engaging, raising awareness and encouraging civil society as a whole. For offsetting emissions from legal entities (organisations/events/initiatives), the most appropriate approach is to carry out an emissions inventory. The programme’s focus is on offsetting for small and medium-sized enterprises.

For offsets carried out via the calculator, the Programme issues a carbon-neutral seal and certificate, sent within 10 working days of receiving payment confirmation via PagSeguro, to the email address provided at the time of registration.

The inventory is a tool that allows the mapping of emission sources from a process or activity carried out by companies and organisations, events and initiatives, quantifying GHG emissions and recording these activities. Once the inventory has been completed, it is possible to determine the number of trees required to offset the calculated emissions.

First, you define which activities will be offset – whether institutional activities, an event or an initiative, for example. The PCN provides a spreadsheet for the partner to collect the data; once the data has been collected, the emissions are calculated, along with the equivalent number of trees required for offsetting. To carry out the inventory, the Programme uses the GHG Protocol Brazil tool, a calculation tool for estimating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, provided by FGVces and WRI. For this type of partnership, the Programme issues a carbon-neutral seal and certificate. For further details, please contact our team.

To offset the emissions calculated by the inventory and the website calculator, the PCN offers tree planting in Agroforestry Systems (SAFs). The PCN carries out tree planting in the Uatumã Sustainable Development Reserve, where we work with the local community using agroforestry systems that intercrop native species with agricultural crops, in line with the family’s interests and the local economy.

Offsetting: conducting the inventory, planting, maintaining and monitoring the trees, issuing a planting certificate and issuing a carbon-neutral seal.

Donation: planting, maintaining and monitoring the trees and issuing a planting certificate.

Partners can support the Programme by donating trees, without linking this to emissions offsetting, by donating a sum x defined by the partner themselves, which will be converted into planted trees. For this type of partnership, the Programme issues only a planting certificate. For further details, please contact our team.

For the calculator and inventory options, the PCN issues a carbon-neutral seal and certificate; for the donation option, only a planting certificate is issued. Idesam’s planting project, as well as the methodology used, is not certified by a third party. The seal we issue is issued entirely by Idesam and verifies your partner’s carbon neutralisation, attesting to the commitment made to Idesam, as well as confirming that Idesam is committed to planting the trees necessary for the offset and to maintaining and monitoring the area. Please contact us for further information.

Planting takes place once a year, between January and March, during the Amazon region’s rainy season, which is conducive to the best development of the seedlings.

Yes. In line with Idesam’s principles of transparency, we keep track of every tree planted to ensure they will thrive over time. For traceability management, we have a planting platform available on the Idesam website. You can see exactly where the tree was planted and which family has benefited from the agroforestry scheme, using the partner code provided once all stages of the partnership have been completed.

How can I contribute?

The IDESAM Carbon Neutral Programme is open to companies, events and individuals interested in offsetting their GHG emissions and contributing to climate change mitigation, whilst also generating a range of socio-environmental benefits for the communities living in the Uatumã RDS. The activities to be carbon-neutralised are, for the most part, related to electricity consumption, air travel, land and/or river transport, accommodation, amongst others.
