Regatão do Bem COVID-19

The traditional communities of the Amazon, true guardians of the forest who depend on its resources for their livelihood, are facing increased vulnerability due to the new coronavirus pandemic. With various projects in over 10 municipalities in Amazonas, Idesam is intimately familiar with this challenging reality, which is why it is launching the ‘Regatão do Bem’ social initiative to help deliver food supplies to families at risk.

The campaign aims to collect food for families in the most remote areas of the Amazon, such as communities in the interior of Lábrea and Apuí, who live mainly from sustainable extractive activities and whose sources of income have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, Idesam is mobilising digital influencers, institutional partners and companies to collect donations of food and other essential items for these communities.

Areas of action

  • Provision of food parcels and hygiene and safety supplies to families and associations;
  • Training activities, distribution of information and prevention materials;
  • Raising investment in technology and local raw materials to create products to combat the disease via the Priority Bioeconomy Programme;
  • Technical assistance and logistical support to maintain production and business operations.

Partnerships established

With the support of partners and individuals, Idesam secured a large number of donations, which came in various forms and were channelled into donations for the project’s beneficiaries.

Through Idesam’s institutional website (idesam.org/apoie), during the campaign’s fundraising period (May to September), R$1,414.57 was raised, enabling the purchase of 25 food parcels and hygiene kits (each valued at R$57).

In total, the band donated 1,000 kg of food, almost R$17,000 and 100 packed lunches, which were distributed among eight Brazilian charities supporting people in vulnerable situations during the pandemic.

In partnership with Ifam and a local group of 20 seamstresses, the Aliança Guaraná de Maués is producing and distributing more than 20,000 fabric face masks free of charge, to be distributed to healthcare professionals and the municipality’s low-income population;

We have received a donation of 300 face masks from Greenpeace, which will be distributed in the communities where the campaign is active;

Sobrebarba, a natural beard care products company and Idesam’s partner in the Carbon Neutral Programme, has donated 6 litres of hand sanitiser, which will be sent to producer associations in the interior, in Apuí and the Uatumã reserve;

In 2022, through a partnership with the Arte.Social Project, the proceeds from watercolour paintings were donated to Idesam to strengthen the campaign’s institutional capacity; this contribution is equivalent to 30 food parcels for Apuí, as well as helping to cover logistics costs (fuel).

Through a call for proposals by the Banco do Brasil Foundation and partners, Idesam was selected to receive R$ 84,842, which will be used to purchase 1,600 food parcels and 1,600 hygiene kits. Of this amount, R$ 610 will be used for the logistics of distributing the food parcels;

Later in 2021, with the persistence of the COVID-19 pandemic and its negative impacts, particularly on the most vulnerable populations, the Regatão do Bem campaign was continued.This initiative was made possible thanks to a partnership between Idesam and the Banco do Brasil Foundation (FBB), which donated R$ 500,000 to various organisations across several states in the country as part of efforts to combat the pandemic. The partnership between Idesam, FBB, Rema and Onisafra enabled the donation of approximately 50 tonnes of food, equivalent to 3,200 food parcels for indigenous communities and socially vulnerable families.
